Sculptures and paintings from around the world

Paintings by Caravaggio, sculptures by Bernini and other works of huge importance to the early Roman Baroque are on view together for the first time ever at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. We've thoroughly selected each masterpiece and prepared great guided tours for our visitors. Let this website give you an impression of what awaits you at the temporary exhibition.

    ANCIENT TIMES

    icon

Let us give you a little history

Between 1600 and 1650, Rome was an influencing art centre attracting many talented artists. In Rome, new ideas appeared – instigated by Caravaggio (1571–1610) and continued by Bernini (1598–1680), then went on to affect the rest of Europe.

Caravaggio and Bernini are famous for creating images of persons that were true to life. They depicted humans in motion to follow what moved them from the inside, the humans‘ feelings. This connection between reality and emotion was new in those ages and became signature of the Baroque era.
Our set of guided tours of the exhibition opens a dialogue between sculptures and paintings. It reveals how Caravaggio and Bernini were understood by their contemporaries.

    4/5 on Yelp.com

A large and diverse museum. I was pleasantly surprised by a great collection of impressionists. My recommendations are to pre-select a specific topic or collection and it is better to come to the opening of the museum on a weekday because otherwise, there will be many people. Or, you can join a guided tour.

“ Art, although produced by man's hands, is something not created by hands alone, but something which wells up from a deeper source out of our soul.....My sympathies in the literary as well as in the artistic field are drawn most strongly to those artists in whom I see most the working of the soul. ”

    The Great Epoch: Impressionism

Impressionists have changed our idea of painting. They proved that the main thing in art is the impressions that the picture evokes, and not the accuracy of the strokes or the realism of the image.
